Nominal species of the genus Gyrodactylus von Nordmann 1832 (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae), with a list of principal host species

Abstract: The total diversity of the monogenean genus Gyrodactylus is evaluated. There are 409 potentially valid species names within the genus, recorded from c. 400 host species. Five species have been placed within Fundulotrema and an additional 51 Gyrodactylus species names represent synonyms, nomina nuda or have been reassigned to other non-viviparous monogenean genera. While the majority of Gyrodactylus species (59%) are recorded from single hosts, some have a much broader broad range.

“…Guppies are commonly infected by the monogenean worm Gyrodactylus, a genus of ubiquitous host-specific ectoparasites on fishes (Harris and Lyles, 1992;Kearn, 1994;Harris et al, 2004). Gyrodactylus are viviparous and reproduce directly on the host, exhibiting hyperviviparity: a mature female has in its uterus a fully developed embryo that in turn has a developing embryo within its uterus (Kearn, 1994).…”

“…More than four hundred potentially valid Gyrodactylus species are described from nearly 400 hosts in a wide variety of fish families and orders, but the real species number is estimated to be more than 20 000 (Bakke et al 2002, Harris et al 2004. About 20 Gyrodactylus species are recorded as infesting salmonids (Ergens 1983, Malmberg 1993, Bakke et al 2002.…”

“…Four species (D. cryptomeres, G. gobiensis, G. gobii and G. markakulensis) were reported only from gudgeon and are considered as strict specialists (Harris et al, 2004). Three species (G. gasterostei, G. vimbi and P. homoion) are generalists.…”

“…Three species (G. gasterostei, G. vimbi and P. homoion) are generalists. Gyrodactylus sedelnikowi is reported as a specific parasite for stone loach Barbatula barbatula (L.) (see Harris et al, 2004) and its finding in gudgeon is accidental. Stone loach was abundant at the sampling locality and during a growth and dispersal of gyrodactylids, they may also have transferred to the nonspecific gudgeon host (Poulin, 1992).…”
