“…In addition, it has been shown that treatment of HIV-1-infected patients with IFN-␣2a resulted in reduced levels of plasma vRNA levels (36). There are, however, more than 20 IFN-␣ subtypes that are encoded by different genes (25). The exact function and tissue distribution of these IFN-␣ subtypes is not known and requires additional studies.…”

“…Defined amounts of various human IFN-α subtypes purchased from PBL, Biomedical Laboratories (New Brunswick, N.J., U.S.A.) were added to WISH cells (final volume 250 µl). Numerical designation of IFN-α subtypes, approved by the Nomenclature Committee of International Society for Interferon Research (12) has been used in this work. Activity was measured by the manufacturer by CPE inhibition assay on bovine Madine Darbie Bovine Kidney (MDBK) cells challenged with VSV.…”

“…A wide variety of immunotherapy protocols using interferon-alpha (IFN-α) and/or interleukin-2 (IL-2) have been developed, however, the response rate remains unsatisfactory at around 10-20% (2, 7). IFN-α represents a large family of structurally related genes consisting of at least 14 subtypes (3). Each subtype may have different biological activities.…”
