Noise-Robust Channel Estimation for DVB-T Fixed Receptions

Abstract: This paper proposes a noise-reduction method to improve the channel-estimation performance in DVB-T receivers. In the proposed method, all estimated channel coefficients at each frequency bin up to present time are averaged without the increase of hardware complexity. Computer simulation shows that the proposed method improves the channel estimation performance in overall SNRs.

“…This method can provide more accurate interpolation results because the noise power at the pilot position is suppressed by averaging adjacent frames. Meanwhile, a similar noise reduction method by averaging the channel coefficients of LS estimation in two or more OFDM frames is proposed in [32,33]. These averaging methods in [31][32][33], which use a fixed average frame number, can be implemented on time invariant channels and are very simple to implement in practice.…”

However, it cannot be applied directly to dynamic channels, because the Doppler spread and the ensuing ICI in dynamic channels will bring Doppler distortion in the averaging process.…”

“…First of all, the channel is assumed not to vary in time domain for four data symbols, which is a similar assumption to other channel estimators for DVB-T [22]- [25]. Therefore, the pilots are gathered in groups of four OFDM data symbols (in frequency domain) in only one symbol, obtaining one pilot subcarrier out of three subcarriers.…”
