Noise radiated by low-Reynolds number flows past a hemisphere at Ma = 0.3

Abstract: Flows past a hemisphere and their noise generation are investigated at the Reynolds numbers (Re) of 1000 and 5000. The Mach number is 0.3. The computational method of the flows is large eddy simulation. The noise is computed using the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings Formulation 1C (F1C). An integral surface with an open end is defined for the F1C. The end surface is removed to reduce the numerical contamination that is introduced by vortices passing this surface. However, the contamination cannot be completely re… Show more

“…The polyhedral mesh generation method can control the growth ratio of cell size in the near field to small value. The growth rate is set to 1.05, as [12,13]. The polyhedral mesh has the comparable cell size settings as the tetrahedral mesh.…”

“…3,4 The automotive industry is also focused on the study of flow past vehicles and the noise induced by it. To mention a few works, Hartmann et al 5 and Khalighi et al 6 studied the noise generated by the air flow around the side mirror of a generic vehicle model, while Pe´rot et al 7 and Yao et al 8 investigated the half cylinder and the hemisphere, respectively, as a simplification of side mirrors. Open wide cavities, the object of the present work, are also common parts of vehicle designs and their acoustic performance is a key issue of comfort for passengers or outside listeners.…”

“…Specifically, the numerical investigation concerns the noise scattered by a moving, non-lifting wing, when impinged by an acoustic disturbance generated by a co-moving point source. ror, a hemisphere embedded in free stream was investigated using large eddy simulation (LES) [86]. The wake was found to contain predominant exterior noise sources.…”
