In order to provide auditory comfort indoors, it is necessary to prevent noise generation and transmission. In this respect, coating materials are essential in reducing sound transmission between interior spaces in noise-generating buildings. Wood is one of the most widely used materials for interior walls and floor coverings. Wood cladding materials can reduce noise transmission. However, the wide variety of types of wood cladding material will create differences in its contribution to noise insulation in this sense. In this direction, the study aimed to investigate the noise transmission properties of different types of wood veneer materials. This study measured the sound transmission amounts of different wood veneer materials with a particular device. This apparatus was used to determine the amount of sound transmitted from the inner face of the veneer material to the outer face of the veneer material of the noise source in an isolated environment with other surfaces touching only the inner face of the veneer material. The measurements were made with the help of this box so that the sound transmission data of different types of wood veneer materials with the same environment and noise source were evaluated using the comparative analysis method. For the study, 24 different wood veneer materials were tested. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the wood cladding material effectively reduces the amount of sound transmission and that there is variability in sound transmission performance depending on the wood species.

BackgroundNoise pollution has increased to alarming extent in most of the urban areas in Pakistan. It is assumed even more perilous than air and water pollution due to its direct acute and chronic physio-psychological effects. The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the psychological and physiological effects caused by traffic noise on traffic wardens and to find relation type between exposure time and effect.MethodsThree wardens check posts near roads were selected for survey in Taxila and Islamabad cities of Pakistan. Survey conducted included noise measurements at aforementioned check posts for one month and Performa based interviews of traffic wardens.Results and conclusionsAnalysis of results showed that noise levels varied between 85-106 dB hence violating OSHA regulations. Major psychological effects found in wardens were aggravated depression 58%, stress 65%, public conflict 71%, irritation and annoyance 54%, behavioral affects 59% and speech interference 56%. Physiological effects found were hypertension 87%, muscle tension 64%, exhaustion 48%, low performance levels 55%, concentration loss 93%, hearing impairment 69%, headache 74% and cardiovascular issue 71%. Relation between exposure time and effects were evaluated by using simple regression test in excel. Percentage of psychological and physiological effects in wardens varied with the exposure time; aggravated depression (R2 = 0.946, P = 0.133), stress suffering (R2 = 0.014, P = 0.173), public conflict (R2 = 0.946, P = 0.133), irritation and annoyance (R2 = 0.371, P = 0.137), behavioral affects (R2 = 0.596, P = 0.0616) and speech interference (R2 = 0.355, P = 0.445), hypertension (R2 = 0.96, P = 0.00095) and cardiovascular issue (R2 = 0.775, P = 0.044).

Effects of 85 dB Noise Exposure on Macro and Trace Element Levels in Plasma and Brain Areas of Rats

In this study, our hypothesis was that workplace noise can alter brain element levels like immobilization and light-dark cycle shift, and we aimed to investigate the effects of workplace noise on element levels of brain areas as well as changes in blood of chronically noise-exposed rats. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into three groups. The first group was the control. The second group (noise exposed) was subjected to daily 8 h 85 dB workplace noise for 15 days, and the third group (noise exposed plus normal condition) was also subjected to the same noise exposure and then returned to normal condition for 15 days. In noise-exposed group, Na, K, Ca, Mg , Fe, Cu, and Zn levels in plasma significantly increased when compared with controls (p = 0.03 for Na; p = 0.005 for K and Mg; p = 0.002 for Ca and Fe; p = 0.01 for Cu and Zn). In this group, Fe level of temporal lobe significantly increased (p = 0.021) while Mg level significantly increased in frontal (p = 0.021) and temporal (p = 0.001) lobes when compared with controls. In the noise-exposed plus normal condition group, plasma Na, K, Fe, Cu, and Zn levels were greatly similar to controls. But, plasma Ca and Mg levels significantly decreased when compared with controls (p = 0.002 and p = 0.007) and noise-exposed group (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001). Fe level of temporal lobe significantly increased when compared with controls (p = 0.001) and noise exposed group (p = 0.001). These alterations may be attributed to impaired intake of water and micronutrients or their excretions, emerging by acoustic stress.
