Construction noise is an integral part of urban social noise. Construction workers are more directly and significantly affected by construction noise. Therefore, the construction noise situation within construction sites, the acoustic environment experience of construction workers, and the impact of noise on them are highly worthy of attention. This research conducted a 7-month noise level (LAeq) measurement on a construction site of a reinforced concrete structure high-rise residential building in northern China. The noise conditions within the site in different spatial areas and temporal stages was analyzed. Binaural recording of 10 typical construction noises, including earthwork machinery, concrete machinery, and hand-held machinery, were performed. The physical acoustics and psychoacoustic characteristics were analyzed with the aid of a sound quality analysis software. A total of 133 construction workers performing 12 types of tasks were asked about their subjective evaluation of the typical noises and given a survey on their noise experience on the construction site. This was done to explore the acoustic environment on the construction site, the environmental experience of construction workers, the impact of noise on hearing and on-site communications, and the corresponding influencing factors. This research showed that the noise situation on construction sites is not optimistic, and the construction workers have been affected to varying degrees in terms of psychological experience, hearing ability, and on-site communications. Partial correlation analysis showed that the construction workers’ perception of noise, their hearing, and their on-site communications were affected by the noise environment, which were correlated to varying degrees with the individual’s post-specific noise, demand for on-site communications, and age, respectively. Correlation analysis and cluster analysis both showed that the annoyance caused by typical construction noise was correlated to its physical and psychoacoustic characteristics. To maintain the physical and mental health of construction workers, there is a need to improve on the fronts of site management, noise reduction, equipment and facility optimization, and occupational protection.

Noise exposure from worksite can cause a lasting effect of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). The effect may vary according to industries with manufacturing and construction industries among heavily affected. However, the total number of compensation cases is still low compared to the affected population of construction industry workers. This might due to inefficient and slow compensation process. This paper aim to evaluate the current compensation process for NIHL, with in-depth discussion about the procedure adopted to find alternative ways to expedite and improve the compensation process involving noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) cases. Although the compensation methodologies is not relatively new, the current practice today still leaves gaps in processing compensation cases efficiently and promptly. In this study, compensation process for NIHL cases were reviewed. Data were collected through articles, regulation and law acts. It was complemented with research visits to social security and insurance providers. The result demonstrates that while the current process adopted is workable, it still inefficient to cater the population of affected.

Effects of Cybersickness Mitigation Methods on Behavior: A Comparative Study Based on the Skill–Rule–Knowledge Model

Cybersickness (CS) is a pressing issue in virtual reality (VR) systems. While various mitigation methods (MMs) have been developed to counteract CS, their effects on human behavior remain largely unexplored, raising concerns about their potential applications. Using Jens Rasmussen's skill--rule--knowledge (SRK) model as a framework, our study investigated the effects of two widely adopted MMs---dynamic field of view and dynamic blurring---in VR. We compared these methods to a baseline condition where no MM was applied. We designed three VR tasks that align with the behavioral levels of the SRK model. In a within-subject study (N = 22), participants completed each task using these MMs. We measured task performance, CS symptoms, and locomotion control. Additionally, qualitative feedback was collected. Our results revealed that neither MM significantly alleviated CS across different VR scenarios. Furthermore, while some participants found MMs helpful, a larger portion reported visual hindrances, and a significant performance drop was measured in the skill-based task. More critically, participants indicated behavioral adaptations in response to the MMs, including changes in locomotion strategies and viewing behavior. Potential causes and implications were discussed. In conclusion, MMs offer promise, but their application necessitates a nuanced understanding of their impacts. We recommend a context-sensitive approach when designing and integrating MMs, prioritizing both maximizing CS mitigation and minimizing interference with the natural behaviors of users.
