Noise emitted from a generic side-view mirror with different aspect ratios and inclinations

Abstract: Noise radiated from flow past different configurations of the Half-Round Mirror (HRM) mounted on a plate has been investigated using computational aeroacoustics (CAA).The Stress-Blended Eddy Simulation (SBES), together with the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy, was employed to predict near field flow and far-field noise, respectively. The numerical methodology was verified and validated for the standard HRM case against several previously published numerical and experimental data sets, which pr… Show more

“…Ansys-Fluent ® 47 is known to resolve these equations well for problems like the separated and wake flows at moderate flow velocities [48][49][50][51] . Recently, the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) module in the considered flow solver has been adopted popularly 52,53 to study v-gutter type time-dependent wake-vortex flow problems. The flow field of the v-gutter is a classic bluff body problem, where the wake characteristics are periodic with turbulent coherent structures present downstream.…”

“…Lastly, from Figure 10, large number of vortices can be seen forming around the side-view mirrors. Usually, vortices around mirrors are not evaluated directly, but a more relevant factor is the noise load caused by the increased velocities [22][23][24].…”

“…Flow-induced noise is a common issue in many application scenarios, and there have been numerous numerical simulation eforts dedicated to noise prediction [12][13][14]. Chode et al [15] explore the aerodynamic noise generated by a standard squareback body with inclined side-view mirrors, employing a hybrid computational aeroacoustic method. Te fndings highlight that the absence of side-view mirrors reduces overall noise, attributing the A-pillar as a signifcant contributor.…”
