Noise and occam's inversion of resistivity tomography data

Abstract: Synthetic model data are used to show the effects of noise and noise estimates on Occam' s Inversion of crossborehole resistivity data. Resolution of the images decreases with increasing noise. The reconstructions are underdetermined so that at low noise levels the images converge to an asymptotic image not the true geo-electrical section. For a noise estimate of standard deviation 10% below the correct, value the algorithm achieves an adequate data fit but the image becomes irregular. When the estimated stand… Show more

“…The &st and cost-effective electrical resistivity tomogr^hy (ERT) method has been widely used for threedimensional (3-D) in-situ monitoring (Daily and Ramirez, 1993;LaBrecque et aL, 1995;LaBrecque et aL, 1996a and1996b;LaBrecque et aL, 1998).…”

“…The electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method is a promising 3-D characterization and monitoring technology for environmental applications (Daily and Ramroz, 1993;LaBrecque et aL, 1995;LaBrecque et al, 1996a and1996b;LaBrecque et aL, 1998).…”

“…Error estimates that are too low result in a noisy model with inversion artifacts, while error estimates that are too high result in an overly smooth model with low resolving power (LaBrecque et al, 1996). The data weighting term in Equation 2.1, W d , is typically of the form diag(1/✏ 1 , ..., 1/✏ n ), in which ✏ i is the percent standard deviation associated with a stack of quadripole resistance measurements.…”

“…Les résistances de contact électrique entre les électrodes et le sol diminuent au cours du temps à partir de l'installation des électrodes, phénomène déjà constaté par d'autres auteurs (LABRECQUE et al, 1996). Ainsi les résultats présentés dans la suite concernent uniquement les temps t4 à t9, dont les résistances de contact restent comprises entre 2 et 12 kΩ (des résistances de prise inférieures à 20 kΩ sont généralement jugées très favorables à la qualité des mesures …”
