Node-like excitations in superconductingPbMo6S8probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Abstract: We present a scanning tunneling spectroscopy study on the Chevrel phase PbMo 6 S 8 , an extreme type-II superconductor with a coherence length only slightly larger than in high-T c cuprates. Tunneling spectra measured on atomically flat terraces are spatially homogeneous and show well-defined coherence peaks. The low-energy spectral weight, the zero bias conductance, and the temperature dependence of the gap are incompatible with a conventional isotropic s-wave interpretation, revealing the presence of low-ene… Show more

“…This may not be the case for CPs: Figure 2(c) displays a SnMo 6 S 8 spectrum from a terrace after 3 months of measurements comprising numerous thermal and magnetic cycles. It is qualitatively similar to data from [19] [see Fig. 2(f)], providing good evidence for low-energy states within the large gap, but does not display a distinct smaller gap.…”

“…In Ref. [19], measurements were performed on old crystals at 1.9 K in an exchange gas, compared with freshly grown samples at 0.4-0.5 K and high vacuum in the present work. The increased thermal broadening at 1.9 K blurs the two gaps, though this should not be sufficient to render the smaller gap invisible.…”

“…The shape of the spectra near the Fermi energy is close to the V-shape with a smeared bottom and is reminiscent of that in Cuprates21 or Chevrel phase family of superconductor PdMo 6 S 8 (Ref. 22). Before this work, the measurements of thermal conductivity in Ta 4 Pd 3 Te 16 suggest that there may exist nodes in the gap functions18.…”

“…The nature of the superconducting state in Tl 2 Mo 6 Se 6 and In 2 Mo 6 Se 6 also remains very unclear, particularly since recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments 18,19 on the related quasi-3D Chevrel phase superconductor PbMo 6 S 8 have provided strong evidence for a highly anisotropic multiband gap function. Inelastic neutron-scattering measurements of the phonon density of states ͑PDoS͒ ͑Ref.…”
