Noble metals: a toxicological appraisal of potential new environmental contaminants.

Abstract: The public health benefits expected by reducing known hazardous emissions from mobile sources should not be compromised by increasing levels of other potentially hazardous unregulated emissions. Catalytic converters are going to be used to meet the statutory requirements on carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from light duty motor vehicles. Platinum and palladium metals are the catalytic materials to be used in these emission control devices. Preliminary experimental evidence and analysis of the impact o… Show more

“…6 Mean values and standard deviations of platinum and rhodium concentrations (lg/cm 2 ) inside full thickness damaged skin. Results derived from 6 damaged and 2 control condition skin samples for each metal tested overall constitute a syndrome called ''Platinosis'' (Brubaker et al 1975).…”

“…From a sustainability point of view, compared with mesoporous Pt surfaces, [170] the imprinted mesoporous Ni surfaces were less costly and had fewer adverse effects. [171] Solid-Phase Synthesis: Solid-phase synthesis technology is an extension of surface imprinting and benefits from the advantages of both oriented MIPs and porous MIPs. It is performed by combining the immobilized template approach with high-dilution polymerization and subsequently removing the template and support substrate (glass beads).…”

“…In contrast, platinum (Pt) is a non-essential element that is known to cause platinosis, 8 a severe asthma like reaction 9 to hexachoroplatinate salts in some sensitive individuals. There is a growing need for Pt measurements in biological matrices due to the increased therapeutic use of Pt coordination compounds as antitumor agents.…”
