Water scarcity is one of the main problems of this century. Water reclamation appears as an alternative due to the reuse of treated wastewater. Therefore, effluents treatment technologies (activated sludge, rotary biological discs, percolating beds) must be improved since they are not able to remove emerging contaminants such as enteric pathogens (bacteria and virus). These pollutants are difficult to remove from the wastewater and lead to adverse consequences to human health. Advanced oxidation processes, such as single and catalytic ozonation, appear as suitable complements to conventional processes. Catalytic ozonation was carried out using a low-cost material, a volcanic rock. Single and catalytic ozonation were capable of promoting total Escherichia coli removal from municipal wastewater after 90 min of contact. The presence of volcanic rock increases disinfection efficiency since E. coli regrowth was not observed. The identified viruses (Norovirus genotype I and II and JC virus) were completely removed using catalytic ozonation, whereas single ozonation was not able to eliminate JC virus even after 150 min of treatment. The higher performance of the catalytic process can be explained by the formation of hydroxyl radicals, proving that disinfection occurs in the liquid bulk and not due to adsorption at the volcanic rock.

Concern for the environment and the use of renewable energy sources are the two main priorities of energy policy combined with an environmental policy that is based on the principles of sustainable development. Many aspects should be taken into account in the case of energy production based on biomass/biofuels, in particular, the possibility of the formation of additional by-products. Glycerol is the main by-product during the trans-esterification of vegetable oils to biodiesel. The photocatalytic hydrogen production from the glycerol-water solution is less energy consuming reaction in comparison (for example) with its steam reforming or bio-conversion because it can be processed under mild conditions and low temperature. The paper presents the experimental results of the application process of photocatalytic hydrogen production from an aqueous solution of glycerol, with the use of TiO2 doped with noble metals (platinum, palladium, silver) as a photocatalyst under solar-like light irradiation. The aim was to compare the hydrogen productivity depending on the catalyst concentration, the kind of the doped metal and the amount of the metal in the catalyst. The reaction (glycerol-water with suspended catalyst) mixture was irradiated by Xe-arc lamps (100 W). The influence of the doped metal on the hydrogen yield was studied for the photocatalysts prepared by the sol-gel and photodeposition method. The photocatalysts have been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDX (Quanta FEI 200F, Oxford Instruments X-Max50), X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was proved, that glycerol is a good and efficient substance for the photocatalytic hydrogen production. The prepared and studied photocatalysts are characterized by high stability and very high yield under used process conditions. The experiments were performed in the quartz reactor with volume 1200 cm3. The volume of the reaction solution containing aqueous glycerol solution was 600 cm 3 . The maximum hydrogen production was about 269.13·10-3 [mole H2/(h·gcat)] and it was observed for TiO2 doped by platinum (1% by weight; prepared by photodeposition) for 4.5% aqueous solution of glycerol.

Parabens (esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid) are xenobiosis belonging to endocrine disruptors and commonly used as a preservative in cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical, and personal care products. Their wide use is leading to their appearance in water and wastewater in the range from ng/L to mg/L. In fact, the toxicity of benzylparaben is comparable to bisphenol A. Therefore, it is important to find not only effective but also ecofriendly methods for their removal from aqueous environment since the traditional wastewater treatment approaches are ineffective. Herein, for the first time, such extended comparison of several radical-driven technologies for paraben mixture degradation is presented. The detailed evaluation included (1) comparison of ozone and hydroxyl peroxide processes; (2) comparison of catalytic and photocatalytic processes (including photocatalytic ozonation); (3) characterisation of catalysts using SEM, XRD, DRS, XPS techniques and BET isotherm; (4) mineralisation, biodegradability and toxicity assessment; and (5) cost assessment.
