Abstract:The article presents the folklorist, essayist, journalist and anthropologist Edison Carneiro (1912-1972) and situates him among the "lineages" or intellectual affiliations in the context of studies on Afro-Brazilian religious groups. Resumo O artigo visa dar conta das principais tematizações do sincretismo na antropologia das religiões afro-brasileiras dos anos 1930 e 1940. Depois de propor uma visão de conjunto sobre o tratamento do sincretismo na antropologia das religiões afro-brasileiras entre 1890 e 1960, apresento os principais autores que escreveram sobre o tema nos anos 1930 e 1940. Abordo sucessivamente os diferentes tratamentos tipológicos dados ao tópico, às articulações entre etnografia e teoria encontradas nos vários autores e, por fim, os quadros políticos e ideológicos que permitem esclarecer as razões da importância que o sincretismo ocupou na antropologia das religiões afro-brasileira dessas décadas. Nas conclusões faço uma ponte entre as tematizações do sincretismo no período em análise e o tratamento dado ao tema no decurso dos anos 1950 a 1960.

Resumo A Casa das Minas de São Luís é considerada o mais antigo centro religioso de procedência africana de que se tem notícia no Maranhão. Fundado provavelmente nas primeiras décadas do século XIX, serviu de modelo para outros centros no Norte do Brasil. Tomando por referência os trabalhos de Sergio Ferretti, o artigo apresenta as pesquisas dos anos 1940 que estabeleceram a singularidade da origem daomeana da Casa das Minas e examina as diferentes narrativas, em especial aquela formulada por Pierre Verger em 1953, que buscaram dar conta de sua fundação. Denominei saga de Nã Agontimé esse conjunto de narrativas que contextualizo, então, com base em trabalhos mais recentes sobre o tráfico negreiro atlântico. O artigo argumenta que tais narrativas, situadas na confluência entre mito e história, expressam de modo notável a força simbólica da ideia de origem nos estudos socioantropológicos das religiões afro-brasileiras.
