No significant HTLV seroprevalence in German people who inject drugs

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is transmitted via the same routes as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), its worldwide seroprevalence differs drastically because HTLV is transmitted mainly via infected cells rather than free virus. The sharing of needles and other equipment places people who inject drugs (PWID) at particularly high-risk for such blood-borne diseases.MethodsTo validate the methodology used to process and analyze the dried blood spots (DBS) utilized in the study, dried seru… Show more

“…The prevalence of HTLV-1/2 in Germany is low (about 7/100,000) even in drug users and the HTLV-1 screening of blood and organ donors is consequently not mandatory in this country [20–22]. Nonetheless, rare cases of the diseases associated with HTLV-1 (HAM/TSP and ATLL), are occasionally detected [23, 24].…”

“…HTLV-2 seroprevalence amongst U.S. STI clinic attendees was 7.6% vs. 0.7% for PWIDs vs. non-PWIDs, respectively (77). In other nonendemic countries, no HTLV cases among PWID were found, as in Germany (78).…”
