Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of polypropylene/date palm fiber (PP/DPF) composite materials were investigated in this study, using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method. Different fiber contents and cooling rates, varying from 2.5°C/min to 20°C/ min, were considered. The obtained results indicated that the initial crystallization temperature increases with the increase of the DPF content. This was attributed to the nucleating ability of these fibers. Several theoretical models were used to predict the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of the materials considered in this study. Basically, it was shown that both the Avrami analysis, modified by Jeziorny, and the method developed by Mo could adequately describe such kinetics. The activation energies required during the overall crystallization process and at different amounts of the relative degree of crystallinity were also evaluated using the Kissinger method and the isoconversional analysis of calorimetric data, respectively. It was shown that the presence of the DPFs in the PP matrix decreases these energies, confirming their nucleating ability during the non-isothermal crystallization process.

This article presents preparation of heart‐of‐peach palm sheath (20–40 wt %) incorporated polypropylene (PP) composites using a single screw extruder. This study is aimed at the waste disposal problem, a societal concern considering that the peach palm cultivation being an important economic activity of some countries, which generate five times more waste than actual heart‐of‐palm itself. Both the raw materials and their composites were characterized for specific gravity, compressive and impact strengths, softening temperature, and hardness. It was observed that with increasing filler content the compressive and impact strengths of composites continuously decreased, while specific gravity, vicat softening temperature, and hardness showed the opposite trend. However, the optimum mechanical properties were attained for 30 wt % filler, which was the same filler content at which the highest PP crystallinity index was observed. Results also indicate that the lignocellulosic residue induce beta phase on the PP matrix and decrease thermal stability of the composite. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013

Physico‐mechanical and thermal properties of date palm fiber/phenolic resin composites

In this research, the use of date palm tree trunk fiber as a reinforcement of phenolic resin has been studied. Laminated composite sheets were prepared by compression molding of the pre-impregnated fibers with phenolic resin (novolac-type). The prepared samples were tested for mechanical properties, water absorption, flammability, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results showed that the flexural strength and modulus of the composite samples were 73.25 MPa and 5.9 GPa, respectively. Also the tensile strength and modulus were obtained 30.25 MPa and 3 GPa, respectively. The effect of surface treatment of the fiber with NaOH solution (6%, w/w) on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated, too. An increase of 19%, 14%, and 140% in flexural, tensile and impact strengths and 6% and 16% in flexural and tensile modulus was observed, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fractured surface confirm the improvement of the surface wettability of the treated fibers. Surface treatment had no significant effect on the physical and thermal properties of the composites, while water uptake of the samples was increased. POLYM. COMPOS., 40:3657-3665, 2019.
