Keywords: Trauma; evidence-based practice; PTSD; rape; rape crisis centersSexual violence, including child sexual abuse, rape, sexual assault, and threat of sexual assault, is a serious and widespread problem in the United States. Data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey find that nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced sexual violence other than rape, while 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have experienced rape in their lifetime (Black et al., 2011). Survivors of sexual violence face serious mental health consequences including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse (Jordan, Campbell, & Follingstad, 2010).Although there is a strong evidence base for the effectiveness of several interventions at reducing trauma-induced PTSD, depression, and anxiety in survivors of sexual violence, there is low utilization of these interventions in Rape Crisis Centers (RCCs; Edmond, 2004;Edmond, Lawrence, & Voth Schrag, 2016). RCC counselors indicate they have limited familiarity with, knowledge about, or training in key evidence-based treatments (Edmond, 2004;Edmond et al., 2016). This is not unique to RCCs. Broadly speaking, there is an underutilization of evidence-based treatments in mental health service sectors. Numerous barriers to adoption of evidence-based treatments have been identified including: attitudes about evidence-based practice, intervention characteristics, costs, and access to training, supervision, and consultation (Aarons, 2004;Barnett et al., 2017;Beidas, Edmunds, Marcus & Kendall, 2012;Dorsey et al., 2017; Ragavan, 2012). In order to promote the use of effective treatments for PTSD in RCCs, the current study sought to assess RCC counselors' attitudes towards Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) in general (i.e., how they feel about movement towards the use of EBPs), understand counselors' perceptions of specific Empirically Supported Treatments (ESTs) for PTSD, and evaluate any differences in attitudes and perceptions based on agency location (urban/rural) and counselor educational attainment.

Background and purpose A large degree of variation in clinical practice exists among clinicians evaluating and treating individuals with minor head injuries. Noncontrast head computerized tomography (CT) scans are commonly used to assess for intracranial damage in patients presenting with head injury. This practice is not supported by the evidence and poses harm to patients by increasing exposure to ionizing radiation. This form of radiation exposure increases the risk of developing cancers over the course of the individual's life, and further strains the limited resources of the healthcare system. Project summary This article describes the findings of an evidence‐based practice project assessing the attitudes of clinicians toward an evidence‐based clinical decision support tool (Canadian CT Head Rule [CCHR]). The CCHR has 100% sensitivity in detecting all clinically important brain injuries and any injury requiring neurosurgical intervention. This clinical decision support (CDS) tool is designed to help guide clinicians in the prudent use of head CT scans in people ages 16–64 that have sustained minor head injuries. The Evidence‐Based Attitude Scale was also used to identify which domains were most influential on willingness to adopt into clinical practice. Conclusions The results revealed an 84% increase in clinician knowledge of the use of the CCHR. A majority (83%) of participants reported moderate likelihood of adoption of the CDS tool into clinical practice if they found the tool appealing, and it was required by a governing authority. The use of CDS tools can help healthcare providers mitigate the risk associated with caring for complex patients. CDS tools provide a systematic method to evaluate patients with minor head injuries while assuring consistency of care and quality outcomes. This practice of assuring consistency and good patient outcomes is foundational to the concept of standard of care, which serves to improve clinical practice.

ObjectiveIndividuals with eating disorders (EDs) often do not receive evidence‐based care, such as interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), partly due to lack of accessible training in these treatments. The standard method of training (i.e., in‐person workshops) is expensive and time consuming, prompting a need for more scalable training tools. The primary aim of this pilot and open trial was to examine the effects of an IPT online training platform on training outcomes (i.e., IPT fidelity, knowledge, and acceptance) and, secondarily, whether online training was different from in‐person training (using a comparative sample from a separate study) in terms of training outcomes and patient symptoms.MethodParticipants were therapists (N = 60) and student patients (N = 42) at 38 college counseling centers. Therapists completed baseline questionnaires and collected data from a student patient with ED symptoms. Therapists then participated in an IPT online training program and completed post‐training assessments.ResultsFollowing online training, acceptance of evidence‐based treatments, therapist knowledge of IPT, therapist acceptance of IPT, and treatment fidelity increased; acceptance of online training was high at baseline and remained stable after training. Using the 90% confidence interval on outcome effect sizes, results suggested IPT online training was not different from in‐person training on most outcomes. Results are based on 60% of therapists who originally enrolled due to high dropout rate of therapist participants.ConclusionsFindings from this preliminary pilot study support the use of IPT online training, which could increase access to evidence‐based ED treatment and improve patient care.Public significanceLack of accessible therapist training has contributed to many therapists not delivering, and therefore many patients not receiving, evidence‐based treatment. This study evaluated a highly disseminable online training and compared outcomes to traditional in‐person training and found that training and patient outcomes were not different. Online training has the potential to enhance access to evidence‐base care, which could in turn optimize patient outcomes.
