NNLO hard functions in massless QCD

Abstract: We derive the hard functions for all 2 → 2 processes in massless QCD up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling constant. By employing the known one-and two-loop helicity amplitudes for these processes, we obtain analytic expressions for the ultraviolet and infrared finite, minimally subtracted hard functions, which are matrices in color space. These hard functions will be useful in carrying out higher-order resummations in processes such as dijet and highly energetic top-quark pair prod… Show more

“…We stress further that, in order to fully take into account also the fifth tower α k s ln 2k−4N at NNLL, one would need to know the full matrices H (2) and S (2) and perform a matching to NNLO. Although H (2) became available very recently [15], this is beyond the scope of the present work.…”

“…Resummation studies beyond NLL have been presented in the context of top quark pair production [12,13], for single-inclusive hadron production [11], and for squark and gluino production [14]. At present, full NNLL resummation in the sense described above is not yet possible for most processes, since the required two-loop matching coefficients are usually not yet available (see, however, the recent calculation [15] for massless scattering). Nonetheless, already with knowledge of the one-loop matching coefficients an improvement of the resummation framework becomes possible, providing control of four (instead of five at full NNLL) towers in the partonic cross sections.…”

“…At the moment, the four coefficient functions are known to NNLO [5,7,8], while the two evolution factors are known to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy [5]. Such a level of accuracy is usually referred to as NNLL 0 in the literature, and we adopt that nomenclature here.…”

“…Since the final expression is rather lengthy, we refer the reader to [9], where a detailed derivation is presented. Note that a similar calculation within the framework of SCET was carried out in [26,27] and very recently in [28]. The soft matrix S…”
