NMR spectra of model compounds of poly(vinyl chloride)

The conformation and molecular interaction of polyelectrolyte model compound (2,4-dimethylglutaric acid) in alcohol/water mixtures were investigated by using high resolution NMR spectroscopy.I t is shown that the local conformation of mesa-isomer in alcohol/water mixtures slightly changes with the mole fraction of ethanol. The difference in the chemical shifts of two methylene protons and the chemical shift of carboxyl protons are comparably dependent of the mole fraction of ethanol. These results, however, do not always mean that the change in the viscosity of poly(acry1ic acid) or poly(methacry1ic acid) in alcohol/water mixtures is due to the change of such local conformation as estimated by NMR. On the contrary, it is probably true that such change in the viscosity curve is mainly due to the long-range interaction between non-adjacent segments.It is also shown that the local conformation of mesa-isomer depends upon the use of the solvents, leading to the conclcsion that its local conformation varies with the solvent. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Konformation und molekulare Wechselwirkung der Modellverbindung eines Polyelektrolyten (2,4-Dimethylglutarsaure) in Alkohol/Wasser-Gemischen wurden mittels hochauflosender Kernresonanz untersucht.Es wurde gezeigt, daB sich die lokale Konformation der mesomeren 2,4-Dimethylglutarsaure in Alkohol/Wasser-Gemischen mit dem Molenbruch des dthanols leicht andert. Der Unterschied der chemischen Verschiebungen der beiden Methylenprotonen und die Verschiebung der Carboxylprotonen sind in vergleichbarem MaBe vom Molenbruch des dthanols abhangig. Diese Ergebnisse lassen jedoch nicht den SchluR zu, daB die Viskositatsanderungen van Polyacrylsaure oder Polymethacrylsaure in Alkohol/Wasser-Gemischen auf die durch die NMR-Daten belegten dnderungen lokaler Konformationen zuriickzufiihren sind. Tatsachlich diirfte der Gang der Viskositatskurve hauptsachlich auf die weitreichende Ketten-Wechselwirkung nicht benachbarter Segmente zuriickzufuhren sein.Es konnte gleichzeitig gezeigt werden, daB die lokale Konformation der mesomeren 2,4-Dimethylglutarsaure vom Losungsmittel abhangt. Dies legt den SchluR nahe, daB sich die lokale Konformation mit dem Losungsmittel andert.

The proton chemical shifts of dyads, triads and tetrads of poly(viny1 chloride) were calculated as a function of racemic unit fraction in a chain by taking account of the diamagnetic contribution, magnetic anisotropy effect and polar effect, based on Pople's approximation. The electron densities on the hydrogen atoms in each of the model compounds for the dyad, triad and tetrad units were calculated by the CNDO/2 method. The statistical weights of the preferred conformations for any specified stereochemical configuration were calculated by generating a set of 100 Monte Carlo chains using Flory's matrix method. Thus the proton chemical shifts of methylene and methyne groups in each of the dyad, triad and tetrad units were calculated by averaging over the preferred conformations. Fairly good agreement between the calculated and the experimental values of the proton chemical shifts for the dyad and triad units were obtained, but some discrepancies were found in the case of tetrads especially mrm tetrads. The dependences of the proton chemical shifts of the dyad, triad and tetrad units upon the racemic unit fraction and on the temperature were discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Die chemischen Verschiebungen der Protonen von Diaden, Triaden und Tetraden in Poly(vinylch1orid) wurden als Funktionen des Anteils an racemischen Einheiten in der Kette unter Beriicksichtigung des diamagnetischen Beitrags, des magnetischen Anisotropieeffekts und des Polaritatseffekts nach der Pople'schen Annaherung berechnet. Die Elektronendichte an den Wasserstoffatomen in jeder der Modellverbindungen fur die Diaden, Triaden und Tetraden wurde mit der CNDO/2-Methode berechnet. Die statistischen Gewichte der bevorzugten Konformationen fur jede bestimmte stereochemische Konfiguration wurden durch Bildung einer Reihe von 100 Monte-Carlo-Ketten mit Hilfe der Flory'schen Matrixmethode berechnet. So konnten die chemischen Verschiebungen der Protonen in Methylen-und Methin-Gruppen in jeder Diade, Triade und Tetrade durch Mitteln iiber die bevorzugten Konformationen berechnet werden. Fur die Diaden und Triaden wurde eine relativ gute Ubereinstimmung zwischen den berechneten und I. Ando, A. Nishioka and T. Asakura den experimentellen Werten der protonenchemischen Verschiebungen erzielt. Im Falle von Tetraden, insbesondere bei mrm Tetraden, wurden jedoch einige Diskrepanzen gefunden. Die protonenchemischen Verschiebungen von Diaden, Triaden und Tetraden wurden in Abhangigkeit des Anteils an racemischen Einheiten und als Funktion der Temperatur diskutiert.
