“…In continuation of our research on propolis [9,10] and following early findings on geographical differentiation, untargeted LC-MS metabolomics analysis was employed for chemical composition comparison of Greek and Chinese propolis extracts. Applying PCA, two groups were straightforwardly separated, Greek and Chinese samples, both in the positive and the negative ion modes.…”

“…Previous studies showed that Greek propolis samples are different from the typical European poplar type, since they are rich in terpenes and anthraquinones. In more detail, samples coming from mainland Greece contain low amounts of terpenes and high amounts of flavonoids, phenolic acids and their esters and anthraquinones, whereas samples coming mainly from Greek islands are rich in terpenoids, especially diterpenoids [9]. Some conifer species of the Cupressaceae family seem to be its plant source, while the presence of succinyl derivatives leads to the assumption that species of the Pinaceae participate as well [6].…”

“…Meanwhile, more ROS inside the cells will lead to ageing [ 7 ]. Some theories have pointed out that antioxidants can increase the antioxidant ability of organisms to defend against oxidative stress, and in some ways they are also able to slow down ageing [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Therefore, it is urged to find appropriate antioxidants to reduce oxidation.…”

“…The chemical composition of propolis varies greatly, therefore, many different types of propolis have been identified around the world. In our previous study 1 , 20 Greek methanolic propolis extracts were investigated and two separate group of samples were observed: a ) propolis samples rich in terpenoids originating from Islands, and b ) propolis rich in flavonoids from Mainland Greece, exhibiting strong tyrosinase and high collagenase inhibition, respectively. In this study, propolis sample (PR09) from Mainland and propolis sample (PR10) from Island group were selected for further investigation.…”
