NMR, GC–MS and ESI‐FTICR‐MS Profiling of Fatty Acids and Triacylglycerols in Some Botswana Seed Oils

Abstract: In the search for non-traditional seed oils, physicochemical parameters, fatty acid (FA) and triacylglycerol (TAG) profiles for five Botswana seed oils, obtained by Soxhlet extraction, were determined. GC-MS and 1 H-NMR analyses showed the FA profiles for mkukubuyo, Sterculia africana, and manketti, Ricinodendron rautanenii, seed oils dominated by linoleic and oleic acids, 26.1, 16.7 and 51.9, 24.4%, respectively, with S. africana containing significant amounts of cyclic FAs (19.9%). “…In terms of mineral content, the mesocarp and seed tissues of S. rautanenii are excellent sources of essential minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, sodium, copper, zinc and calcium [10]. Several amino acids and fatty acids (Table 2) have been identified from the mesocarp and seed tissues of S. rautanenii [10,17,[23][24][25][26][27][28]. Compared to conventional nut and oil crops such as A. occidentale, S. rautanenii is a rich source of macro-and micronutrients (Tables 1 and 2).…”

“…The Maale and Ari communities in Ethiopia utilize Sterculia africana as an antiemetic and to treat food poisoning as well as treating fever in the Blue Nile state, Sudan [22,23]. Sterculia africana is one of the sources of nontraditional seed oils in Botswana [24] and is widely used in African traditional medicine. In Somalia a decoction of the crushed fresh root is drunk as an anthelmintic.…”
