NKG2D functions as an activating receptor on natural killer cells in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus)

Abstract: The natural killer group 2 membrane D (NKG2D) receptor is an NK-activating receptor that plays an important role in host defense against tumors and viral infections. Although the marmoset is an important and reliable animal model, especially for the study of human-specific viral infections, functional characterization of NKG2D on marmoset NK cells has not previously been conducted. In the present study, we investigated a subpopulation of marmoset NK cells that express NKG2D and exhibit cytolytic potential. On … Show more

“…Cr release assay 51 Cr release assay was performed as described (24). In brief, target cells were labeled with 50 lCi of Na 2 ( 51 Cr)O 4 for 60 min at 37°C in RPMI-1640 medium containing 10% FCS, and were washed three times with medium prior to their use.…”

“…We also analyzed the phenotype of NK cells [ 88 ]. If we accept the cross-reactivity of human anti-CD56 monoclonal antibodies in CMs, CD56 molecules were not expressed on resting NK cells, and after stimulation with IL-2, activated NK cells expressed CD56.…”

“…In non-human primates the expression of CD8, NKG2A, NKG2C, NKp30 and NKp46 are used to define NK cells and their developmental stages instead of CD56, which is expressed to a lesser degree than in human NK cells (23)(24)(25). Human NK cell expression of CD56 correlates with NK cell motility, formation of a developmental synapse, and control of cytotoxicity (26,27).…”
