The goal of this study was to investigate the properties and growth mechanisms of nitrogen-containing carbon-based coatings obtained with an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge in an N 2 -C 2 H 4 atmosphere. Radically different chemical compositions were observed depending on C 2 H 4 /N 2 ratio. With a low C 2 H 4 concentration (\400 ppm) as a function of the residence time in the discharge, two different growth mechanisms were observed consisting of a highly nitrogenated coating (N/C [ 0.8) and low hydrogen content. At the short residence time, growth was due to mobile small radicals that procured a smooth yet soluble coating, while at the longer residence time, diffusionlimited aggregation of high sticking N-containing radicals produced a cauliflower-like structure. With a high C 2 H 4 concentration (C2,000 ppm), a polymer-like coating with relatively lower nitrogen content (N/C * 0.2) was observed with a cauliflower morphology for the entire coating. Nanoindentation measurements revealed very different physical properties in the two types of coatings.

Low seeding efficiency and poor cell retention under flow-induced shear stress limit the effectiveness of in vitro endothelialization strategies for small-diameter vascular grafts. Primary-amine-rich plasma-polymerized coatings (PPE:N) deposited using low- and atmospheric-pressure plasma discharges on PET and PTFE are evaluated for their ability to improve endothelial cells' kinetics and strength of attachment. PPE:N coatings increase cell adhesion and adhesion rate, spreading, focal adhesion, and resistance to flow-induced shear compared with bare and gelatin-coated PET and PTFE. In particular, about 90% of the cells remain on coated surfaces after 1 h exposure to shear. These coatings, therefore, appear as a promising versatile approach to improve cell seeding strategies for vascular grafts.

One of the major disadvantages of low density polyethylene (LDPE) sheets is their poor adhesive properties. Therefore, LDPE sheets have been treated with atmospheric pressure air plasma (APP) in order to improve their surface properties. In order to simulate the possible conditions in an industrial process, the samples have been treated with two different sample distances (6 and 10 mm) and treatment rates between 100 and 1000 mm·s -1 . The variation of the surface properties and adhesion characteristics of the sheets were investigated for different aging times after plasma exposure (up to 21 days) using contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM), weight loss measurements and shear test. Results show that the treatment increases the polar component (γ s p ) and these changes improve adhesive properties of the material. After the 21 st day, the ageing process causes a decrease of wettability and adhesive properties of the LDPE sheets (up to 60%).
