NITROGEN METABOLISM OF THE ANTARCTIC BIVALVE Laternula elliptica (KING & BRODERIP) AND ITS POTENTIAL USE AS BIOMARKER

Abstract: The Antarctic marine environment is characterized by the extreme seasonality of the primary production in the water column and the low but stable temperatures. Both are considered the main factors in the adaptative evolution of Antarctic ectothermic organisms. Studies about physiological and biochemical processes of the cold-adapted species revealed the presence of antifreeze glycoproteins in the biological fluids and cold-adapted proteins. The low and stable temperatures have resulted in the appearence of enz… Show more

“…Hence in terms of its ecological importance, it has strong support for designation as an Antarctic model species [20] . This is enhanced by the extensive biological knowledge on this species [23] and its use in cross disciplinary research on ageing [24] and climate change [25] [27] . Ocean acidification studies have demonstrated dissolution of shell with exposure to lowered sea water pH [26] , [27] .…”

“…During the austral winter, this bivalve reduces its filtration rate, retracts its siphon to a position below the sediment surface and is in a state of dormancy using proteins as the main energy source (Rodrigues et al, 2007). Accordingly, the renal tissue has a high potential for generating ATP and argininolytic capacity compared to the gills, gonads, siphon and digestive gland (Figure 4) (Rodrigues et al, 2009).…”

“…Studies of specimens collected in Potter Cove, close to Admiralty Bay, revealed that this bivalve meets the necessary prerequisites for monitoring the region, as it has the capacity to bioaccumulate heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PHAs) (Curtosi et al, 2010;Rodrigues et al, 2007).…”

“…A bioacumulação de Cd na biota antártica é um fato registrado por diversos autores que tem sido relacionado à alta biodisponibilidade deste metal no ambiente marinho antártico, fato este possivelmente ligado ao afloramento de águas profundas enriquecidas, à proliferação de algas, e às altas concentrações de Cd na coluna d'água em determinadas regiões (Bargagli et. al., 1996;Rodrigues et. al., 2007).…”
