Nitrogen-doped porous carbon derived from residuary shaddock peel: a promising and sustainable anode for high energy density asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract: We introduce a strategy to convert crude biomass waste into high quality porous carbon and use it as an electrode material for high energy density asymmetric supercapacitors.

“…As shown in Fig. 4b and d, unlike TW-Car, HCl-TW-Car had large quantities of micropores and mesopores (white spots in the dark gray areas) distributed within the surface of the sample, in conformance with previous studies on porous carbon structures31323643. It is important to note that such porous structures can enhance the active surface for Li + storage, reduce the ion diffusion distance, and facilitate liquid electrolyte penetration in order to obtain LIB anode materials with better performance44.…”

“…2a. It is clearly seen that the XRD patterns of TW-Car and HCl-TW-Car possess no distinct characteristic peaks, indicating that both products demonstrate the typical structure of disordered carbon materials3536. There are only two broad peaks at around 23° and 43°, which are assigned to the (002) and (100) crystallographic planes of graphene stacks, respectively.…”

“…[11][12][13][14] Meanwhile, biomasses are recyclable, abundant, and easily accessible on earth, and their conversion into usable carbon is an economical and green method compared with other carbonaceous precursors. [15][16][17][18] Shaddock peels (approximately 10% of the total weight of shaddocks that are a popular fruit in China), as a carbon material derived from natural waste, are viewed as a high value-added precursor of biomass derived hard carbons and have been served as catalyst support, 19 adsorption, [20][21][22] capacitor, 23,24 and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). 25 In the previous studies, 3D connected porous 25 and honeycomb-like 26 shaddock peel-derived hard carbons have been prepared, which showed excellent Na + storage properties.…”
