“…The experimental conditions used were defined based on the study developed by Moura et al (2012) and Barana et al (2013) (Table 1). Nine trials were evaluated that differed by the aeration time in each cycle of 180 minutes and the recirculation ratio (Qr).…”

“…Barana et al (2013) used the same reactor design to treat poultry slaughterhouse effluent with COD of 418 mg.L -1 and observed COD removal above 88%. Moura et al (2012), who evaluated the treatment of synthetic sewage with COD of 353 mg.L -1 in the same reactor, using HRT of 8 to 12 hours, Qr of 5 and aeration of 120 aerobic minutes followed by 60 without aeration, did not notice difference in the efficiency of COD removal, which varied between 85 and 89%.…”

“…The polluter potential of wastewater in slaughterhouse (ARA) is due to the high content of organic matter (BEUX et al, 2007;KIST et al, 2009;CAO & MEHRVAR, 2011), reflecting the presence in this type of effluent of pieces of meat, entrails, fat, fur and especially large volume of blood (PALATSI et al, 2011;BARANA et al, 2013). This fact leads to the search for effective treatment systems, in order to comply with the requirements and standards set by environmental legislation.…”

“…Barana et al (2013) Santos (2014) verificou a potencialidade da remoção concomitante de matéria carbonácea e nitrogenada, em sistema alimentado com água residuária sintética, submetido a relações C/N de 9,7, de 7,6 e de 2,9, TDH de 11,2 horas, e aeração intermitente de 2 horas com aeração e 1 hora sem aeração. A eficiência média de remoção de DQO manteve-se acima de 90% ao longo de todo o período experimental.…”
