“…These results are consistent with those for Ricinus communis, Zea mays, and Calamagrostis villosa seedlings when they were cultured in high concentrations of nitrate and ammonia rather than in phosphorus (Vale et al, 1988;Peuke et al, 1994;Gloser and Gloser, 2000). Spalding and Goldsmith (1993) found that a light-induced increase in K + permeability of cell membrane was gained via ATP-activated channels, resulting in increased cytosolic concentration of K + .…”

“…Our Ca 2+ uptake rates (1À7 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 ) were slightly lower than loblolly pine trees in the field (8 mmol g À1 Lucash et al, 2007) and sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) seedlings in hydroponics (8 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 , Gloser and Gloser, 2000). Magnesium uptake rates (0:1À1:2 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 ) were similar to sycamore maple seedlings in hydroponics (0:2 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 , Gloser and Gloser, 2000) but lower than loblolly pine trees in the field Lucash et al, 2007). Uptake rates of K + were negative (À0:6 to À 3:2 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 ) and fell within the large range we found for loblolly pine trees in the field (À120 to 40 mmol g À1 dwt h À1 , Lucash et al, 2007).…”

“…Insignificant decrease of pH values were observed at the end of the experiments in the NH + 4 amended cultures in both the laboratory and field. This may be attributed to NH + 4 induction of chemical changes resulting in depression of essential cations such as K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ uptake (Gloser and Gloser, 2000). Although the uptake of many inorganic cations is reduced, the uptake of NH + 4 itself is high that plants generally take up an excess of cations relative to anions (Nocito et al, 2002;Spalding et al, 1999;Zhu et al, 2001).…”
