Nitrite exposure may induce infertility in mice

Abstract: In the present study, we investigated the potential of nitrite exposure to induce infertility in mice. Adult female C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into control and nitrite exposure groups. Subsequently, the rate of mouse infertility was calculated, and pathological changes in ovarian tissues were examined using hematoxylin and eosin staining. In addition, TUNEL staining, immunofluorescent labeling, and western blotting were performed to assess cell apoptosis and oxidative stress response in ovarian tissue… Show more

“…Also, in the mouth cavity, bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite, while in the gastrointestinal system, intestinal microflora converts nitrate to nitrite (Kross et al, 1992). Wu, et al (2022) reported that, exposure to 120 mg/kg nitrite in saline as high dose + one pregnancy cycle gavage (from G0 -pup birth) lead to sterility in a time-dependent manner (p<0.05), and 2-round exposure increase sterility than that one-round exposure in adult female mice (p<0.01). Also, mouse sterility can be induced by oxidative stress response and cell apoptosis following the exposure to nitrite suggesting that nitrite exposure in a time-dependent manner.…”

“…No organismo humano, o nitrato pode formar substâncias químicas da classe das nitrosaminas e nitrosamidas, que são tóxicas. Então, a ingestão prolongada de águas contaminadas com elevados índices de nitrato, pode provocar problemas na tireoide, desencadear câncer e na gestação, pode provocar deformações congênitas, dentre outras complicações fisológicas (CÉSAR et al, 2002;MARTÍNEZ, 2018;MATO, 1996;WU et al, 2022).…”
