Zweikernige Komplexe mit Metall-Metall-Bindungen, z. B.[Rh 2 (OAc) 4 ] (Schema 1, A), zeichnen sich durch ihre Fähig-keit aus, direkte Funktionalisierungen von C-H-Bindungen zu katalysieren, [1] indem sie den Transfer von Carben-oder Nitrengruppen (CR 2 bzw. NR) auf organische Substrate vermitteln.[1] Es wird vermutet, dass die katalytisch aktiven Zwischenstufen dieser C-H-Aktivierungen sowohl eine Metall-Metall-Bindung als auch eine Metall-Ligand-Mehrfachbindung aufweisen, so wie in B (Schema 1). Trotz vieler mechanistischer Untersuchungen war es bisher aber nicht gelungen, eine Spezies wie B zu isolieren und zu charakterisieren.[2] Um ein M À M = E-Metall/Metall-Ligand-System mit Mehrfachbindungen zu synthetisieren, haben wir einen Ru À Ru N-Nitridokomplex C gewählt (Schema 1), der in dieser Form bislang nicht bekannt war. Die Synthese dieser Spezies sollte durch thermische oder photolytische Zersetzung des entsprechenden {Ru 2 N 3 }-Azidokomplexes gelingen.[3] Diese Herangehensweise ist attraktiv, weil präparativ nützliche [Ru 2 (Ligand) 4 X]-Komplexe gut bekannt sind [4] und weil Ru einkernige Ru VI -Nitridokomplexe stabilisieren kann, [5] die als geeignete Beispiele für Vergleiche mit C dienen können.Für die Synthese verwendeten wir den bereits beschriebenen Azidokomplex [Ru 2 (dPhf) [6] als Ausgangsverbindung für die Photoreaktion (Schema 2), da er intensive Absorptionsbanden bei 520 nm und 660 nm aufweist.[ Aufgrund seines Quartett-Grundzustandes zeigt 2 ein ausgeprägtes S = 3/2-Signal (g eff = 4.22) im X-Band-EPRSpektrum bei 8 K. Die Photolyse von 2 bei À40 8C erzeugt ein neues, scharfes S = 1/2-EPR-Signal, das von einer hochreaktiven Spezies herrühren muss, da es bei dieser Temperatur schnell abnimmt. Durch Photolyse von gefrorenen Proben von 2 in CH 2 Cl 2 bei 77 K konnten wir die Ausbeute dieser neuen Spezies maximieren und die mit ihrer Bildung einhergehende Farbveränderung von Violett nach Rosa verfolgen (UV/Vis-Spektren siehe Hintergrundinformationen). Das neue axiale EPR-Signal (Abbildung 1) zeigt eindeutig eine S = 1/2-Spezies, bei der es sich vermutlich um das Photooxidationsprodukt [Ru 2 (dPhf) 4 N] (1) handelt, da die Photooxidation formal zwei Elektronen von der Ru 2 -Einheit abzieht und somit nur ein ungepaartes Elektron in einem Ru 2 -d*-Orbital verweilt. Simulation der EPR-Daten ergab die gTensorkomponenten g ? = 2.189 und g k = 1.900, übereinstim-mend mit einer axialen Molekülsymmetrie. Der g k -Wert von unter 2.00 deutet auf eine Spin-Bahn-Kopplung mit unbesetzten d-Molekülorbitalen und damit auf eine höhere Oxidationsstufe des Ru 2 -Kerns hin. Wesentlich bessere Simulationen wurden erhalten, wenn Hyperfeinkopplung zu 101 Ru-und 99 Ru-Kernen berücksichtigt wurde (beide Kerne haben I = 5/2 mit 17 % bzw. 12.8 % natürlicher Isotopenhäu-
