Nitrate Uptake Affects Cell Wall Synthesis and Modeling

Abstract: Nowadays, the relationship(s) about N assimilation and cell wall remodeling in plants remains generally unclear. Enzymes involved in cell wall synthesis/modification, and nitrogen transporters play a critical role in plant growth, differentiation, and response to external stimuli. In this review, a co-expression analysis of nitrate and ammonium transporters of Arabidopsis thaliana was performed in order to explore the functional connection of these proteins with cell-wall related enzymes. This approach highlig… Show more

“…On the other hand, nitrate specifically down-regulates the transcription of genes related to hemicellulose synthesis and transport (Figure 4). Accordingly, similar expression profiles have been recently evidenced in Arabidopsis [61] and rice [62], suggesting that cell wall remodeling might be important for the enhanced nitrate uptake and a correct plant growth. Nevertheless, the exact molecular mechanism by which the N status affects cell wall modelling is still unknown [63].…”

“…5), suggesting a tight relationship between NP starvations and cell wall formation. Cell wall related genes play a role in N starvation (Landi and Esposito 2017). Two genes, Sb01g029310 and Sb02g019380 from the top 30 connected genes from the cluster 8 were predicted as an expansin and arabinogalactan-protein, respectively (Fig.…”

“…Genes involved in trichoblast differentiation, which contain many cell wall related genes, were particularly enriched in NO 3 − responsive genes [ 9 ]. Additionally, a co-expression analysis of NO 3 − transporters, using the ATTED-II database, revealed that they are co-expressed with many cell wall related genes [ 65 ]. However, caution should be exercised in interpreting this data, as a recent meta-analysis of NO 3 − -response transcriptomic data revealed a striking inconsistency in the reproducibility between different studies, noting that the common number of differentially expressed genes between any two experiments is only 6.7% [ 9 ].…”
