Nicotine Vaccines to Assist with Smoking Cessation

Abstract: Tobacco smoking causes cardiovascular, respiratory and malignant disease, and stopping smoking is among the key medical interventions to lower the worldwide burden of these disorders. However, the addictive properties of cigarette smoking, including nicotine inhalation, render most quit attempts unsuccessful. Recommended therapies, including combinations of counselling and medication, produce long-term continuous abstinence rates of no more than 30%. Thus, more effective treatment options are needed. An intrigu… Show more

“…reimbursement). A decisive overall consideration is that stand-alone smoking cessation strategies are not considered to be effective for smoking cessation in general and for NV in particular (Raupach et al, 2012). Thus, public health benefits can only be expected from policies that combine NV with other support, like counselling or medication.…”

“…Nicotine not only stimulates dopamine secretion but also inhibits an enzyme monoamine oxidase B, which is important for the catabolism of dopamine, leading to average dopamine concentrations in smokers well above those of nonsmokers. 4 Nicotine binds in the brain to nicotinic cholinergic receptors. These are ion channels, which allow cations to enter the cell when an agonist docks to the gate on the outer side of the channel.…”
