Nicotine self-administration research: the legacy of Steven R. Goldberg and implications for regulation, health policy, and research

Abstract: Background and rationale Steven R. Goldberg was a pioneering behavioral pharmacologist whose intravenous drug self-administration studies advanced the understanding of conditioned stimuli and schedules of reinforcement as determinants of pattern and persistence of drug-seeking behavior, and in particular, the importance of nicotine in tobacco use. His passing in 2014 led to invitations to contribute articles to psychopharmacology dedicated to his work. Objectives The objectives of this review are to summariz… Show more

“…Some authors suggest that nicotine may reduce anxiety and depressive-like behavior [87,88], although this is much more a common sense idea that most people have (i.e., "nicotine reduces the anxiety and stress") [89]. Thus, as suggested by the "self-medication" hypothesis of drug abuse [90][91][92], accentuated depressive/anxiety symptomatology inherently leads to an increase in tobacco consumption. Moreover, it also fairly well known that tobacco consumption is very high in patients with psychotic disorders [93].…”

“…Congress, 2009). Nicotine is a drug that meets criteria for placement in Schedule III of the CSA (if marketed as a drug but not in the form of tobacco products which are exempted from CSA scheduling along with alcoholic beverages by the CSA) but the potential public health benefits of nicotine were prominent in the decision by the FDA not to recommend scheduling upon approval of nicotine gum in 1985, and in 1996 not to recommend scheduling of a nasal nicotine product that clearly met criteria for such control (Henningfield et al, 2016; U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 1996).…”

“…Our recent research, using the drug self-administration and reinstatement procedures that have showed good validities and translational value for our understanding of drug addictive behavior (Bossert et al, 2013; Henningfield et al, 2016 for exemplary reviews ), demonstrated the impact of the interaction between menthol and nicotine on nicotine-addictive behavior. Specifically, menthol was found to enhance the reinforcing action of nicotine in a self-administration procedure (Biswas et al, 2016) and sustained and reinstated nicotine-seeking responses in an extinction-reinstatement paradigm (Harrison et al, 2017).…”
