“…It has previously been shown that with cigarette SE only during lactation, there were decreased proteins levels of Ucp1 and Cpt1 and reduced sympathetic nerve stimulation upon BAT in female adult rat (55). The same was observed with the administration of isolated nicotine through minipumps on the dams at the same period (56). Similarly, in other rat model of SE only during lactation, SE group male adult offspring did not changed insulinemia, despite higher serum glucose levels, suggesting a pancreatic insulin secretory failure (57).…”

“…Nicotine-altered hypothalamic neuropeptides are important for appetite control in animal studies [195][196][197] and may function similarly in humans. Early-life exposure to nicotine also affected energy expenditure [198], perhaps by "whitening" of BAT that reduced BAT activity [195,199,200]. Prenatal nicotine exposure also led to elevated expression of adipogenic markers in WAT and increased storage of lipids in both WAT and peripheral tissues in rats [191,198,199,201].…”

“…54 The increase in the biosynthetic enzyme DAGL in the female offspring VAT suggests an increased 2-AG synthesis, which could be related with the higher adipocyte area as well as with the increased protein content of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) beta that were previously observed in these animals. 55 It is also known that increased 2-AG biosynthesis is involved in pro-inflammatory and prostaglandin responses, mainly because it serves as substrate for cyclooxygenases. 56,57 Concerning the ECS in the adrenal gland, NIC males did not show any changes, while NIC females had higher NAPE-PLD, which could indicate higher AEA synthesis.…”
