Nickel(II) complexes with substituted ureas

Abstract: A number of nickel(l1) coniplexes ~i t h nicthyl-, n-butyl-, phenyl-, and N,N'dimethylurea ligands were prepared with a variety of anions. All exhibited octahedral coordination geometry. Of the anions, only NCS-was in the coordination sphere. Infrared spectral studies indicate coordination of the ligands through oxygen.

“…Dq for the N,N1-dibutylurea complexes, 1640 cm-l, is slightly greater than the 1540 cm-l of N,Nf-dimethylurea given by Stonestreet et al (7). Substitutents on the urea ligands have some effect on the coordination strengths toward Cr(II1) as toward Ni(I1) (12).…”

“…In [Mn(DMU) 3 I 2 ], the Mn atom is coordinated by three O atoms of the DMU molecules and two iodido ligands (Delaunay & Hugel, 1986). Nickel complexes with DMU are octahedral (except for a thiocyanate-containing complex) (Bailey et al, 1969).…”

“…Ureas may act as ligands to transition metal systems 10 through the O-or the N-atoms: the h 1 -O, h 1 -N and h 2 -N,N¢ modes of bonding 11 have been demonstrated. [15][16][17] The renovated interest in metal complexes (Mn II , Co II , Ni II , Cu II , Zn II , lanthanides) with N,N¢-dimethylurea-DMU, O-bonded to the metal, was due to their ability to form supramolecular 2D structures. Metal complexes containing 2, 4, 6 molecules of urea itself, 10,12 either O-or N-bonded have been described and a rare example of a chelate h 2 -N,N¢ mode of bonding has recently been described.…”
