Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER)

Abstract: The exploration of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is eminently desirable and remains a significant challenge. The composite of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni10Co-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) and the highly conductive carbon material ketjenblack (KB) could be easily obtained from the MOF synthesis in the presence of KB in a one-step solvothermal reaction. The composite and the pristine MOF perform better than commercially available … Show more

“…Figure 5 displays the XRD patterns of NiÀ Zn MOF powder and NiÀ Zn MOF/CC material. The XRD pattern of the NiÀ Zn MOF powder shows peaks at 8.58°, 11.39°, and 13.52°which are consistent with reported NiÀ Zn MOF (CCDC No.802889) [13,15]. Notably, the NiÀ Zn MOF/CC showed a crystal structure with peak positions analogous to those of the NiÀ Zn MOF powder samples.…”

“…Figure 3e Figure 4a-f shows the FESEM of 3D graded hollow spheres in which NiÀ Zn MOF mesh-like shells are deposited on the ). [13,15] Notably, the NiÀ Zn MOF/CC showed a crystal structure with peak positions analogous to those of the NiÀ Zn MOF powder samples. This identifies that the as-prepared powder form and NiÀ Zn MOF deposited on CC exhibit similar topologies, which are formed by metal ions linking with BTC legends.…”

“…The various mechanistic schemes on the OER in alkaline solution have been proposed over the years with the honorable works of Bockris and Otagawa [ 29 ], Krasil’shchikov [ 30 ], Kobussen and Broers [ 31 ], and O’Grady and Yeager [ 32 ]. Krasil’shchikov’s OER mechanism, one of the widely known mechanisms, can be described by the following reactions with the corresponding Tafel slopes [ 30 , 33 ]. S + OH − ⇄ SOH + e − Tafel slope = 120 mV dec −1 SOH + OH − ⇄ SO − + e − Tafel slope = 60 mV dec −1 SO − → SO + e − Tafel slope = 45 mV dec −1 2SO → 2S + O 2 Tafel slope = 19 mV dec −1 where S is a catalytically active surface site.…”

“…The first weight loss from 100-250 1C is assigned to the loss of crystallization of water/ DMF molecules. [35][36][37] The second weight loss from 250-500 1C is attributed to the disintegration of the organic framework stepwise. 30,36 Above 500 1C, the observed constancy in the curve is because the crystallization of materials and temperature for crystallization of the materials differ slightly from each other.…”
