Nicholas Reactions of Alkynyl- and Alkenyltrifluoroborates

Abstract: The Lewis acid mediated Nicholas reaction of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates and propargyl acetate-hexacarbonyldicobalt complexes affords 1,4-diyne dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes in good yields. The analogous Nicholas reactions of potassium alkenyltrifluoroborates give 1,3-enyne dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes in most cases, although the initial site of reaction can vary. Potassium vinyltrifluoroborate itself affords alkynylcyclopropane complexes.

“…We were very disappointed when we found that both BT8O and IC8O are extremely unstable and could not be isolated after decomplexation using a dozen common Co deprotecting reagents. In all cases of using either oxidizing decomplexation ( N -methylmorpholine- N -oxide (NMO), I 2 , cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN)) ,, or ligand exchangeable reagent: tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF), ,, only complex polymeric mixtures were obtained. By treatment with other ligand exchangeable reagents (ethan-1,2-diamine (EDA), dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD)), the reaction did not take place at all (Table S1).…”

“…The expected products, 1,4-(skipped) diynes and enynes, are valuable both as synthetic intermediates and for their presence as extant motifs in natural products . In 2017, we communicated a preliminary report on their reactivity, and we now wish to provide a more detailed description of the experimental reactivity patterns of alkynyl- and alkenyltrifluoroborates with propargyldicobalt cations, supported by a density functional theory (DFT)-based computational evaluation of the most likely reaction pathways.…”

“…We have reported recently that both potassium vinyltrifluoroborates and alkynyltrifluoroborates engage successfully in Nicholas reactions, 15 and so we attempted representative examples here. Potassium ( E )-trifluoro(4-methylstyryl)borate engaged in reaction with 6a to give 7p (56%), while potassium trifluoro(1-hexynyl)borate afforded 7q in 78% yield.…”
