Niche Specialization and Functional Overlap of Bamboo Leaf and Root Microbiota

Abstract: Leaves and roots harbor taxonomically diverse bacterial assemblages which enhance plant growth and performance by increasing nutrient supply and resistance to stress. An extensive investigation of bacterial diversity and composition between leaf and root microbiota of 15 bamboo species differing in rhizome types, lifeforms and sampling sites were conducted by high-through sequencing. The alpha diversity between leaf and root microbiota was not significantly different, whereas, their beta diversity differed rem… Show more

“…Bioinformatics processing of 16S rRNA sequences was based on previous studies (Zheng et al, 2018b ; Zhang et al, 2019 ; Zheng and Gong, 2019 ; Zheng and Lin, 2020 ) using QIIME (Caporaso et al, 2010 ), USEARCH (Edgar, 2010 ), and in-house scripts. Briefly, after generating high-quality reads, unique reads were assigned to amplicon sequence variants (ASVs).…”

“…The 16S rRNA sequences obtained from the MiSeq platform were used for microbial ecology analysis. The bioinformatics processing was referred to Hong et al ( 2021 ) and Zheng (Zheng & Gong, 2019 ; Zheng & Lin, 2020 ) using QIIME (Caporaso et al, 2010 ), USEARCH (Edgar, 2010 ), and in‐house scripts. Briefly, after the generation of high‐quality reads, unique reads were clustered to form OTUs at the 99% sequence similarity by the pick_open_reference_otus.py script.…”

“…The diversification and activities of microbial communities existing in paddy fields are generally influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, which include temperature, precipitation, humidity, pH, agrochemicals, cations and anions, soil texture and structure, and the rice cultivar ( Kim and Lee, 2020 ; Zheng and Lin, 2020 ). Agricultural management practices for aerobic rice, such as the method of crop establishment (direct-seeding) and the duration of alternate flooding and drying conditions during the rice growth period, also influence the microbial community structure and abundance.…”
