Niche partitioning of the genetic lineages of the oak powdery mildew complex

Abstract: Recent molecular studies have shown that four genetic lineages, probably cryptic species, cause oak powdery mildew in Europe. We tested the hypothesis of niche differentiation between the two most frequent species (Erysiphe alphitoides and Erysiphe quercicola), by determining their relative prevalences at various times during the growing season. E. quercicola was strictly associated with the flag-shoot symptom in a 2-yr sampling campaign of 35 natural oak seedling populations. Additional sampling during Aug.eS… Show more

“…This might be explained by a higher sensitivity of infected buds to low temperatures (Jarvis et al 2002). However, Feau et al (2011) could not observe any geographic pattern in flag shoot frequency (resulting from the development of infected buds) in oak regenerations in an extensive survey in France. Relatively high frequencies of flag shoots were sometimes observed in areas with continental climate.…”

“…However, the disease was not reported in Europe before 1907 when sudden severe outbreaks were observed; the causal pathogen was then reported as invasive. It identity and origin was the subject of considerable debate in the years following the emergence of oak powdery mildew (reviewed in Mougou et al 2008 andDesprezLoustau et al 2011). The use of molecular tools has recently allowed more precise characterization of the causal agent.…”

“…For example, different stems of the same plant can be infected by different genotypes of anther smut (59), and two cryptic species of powdery mildew can co-occur on the same host individuals (Erysiphe alphitoides and Erysiphe quercicola) in natural oak stands (42). Thus, cells or localized collections of cells within a tissue may be appropriately considered a patch within the metacommunity framework, whereas systemic transport and infection distant from the point of pathogen entry represent among-patch movement (Figure 1a,b).…”
