“…The niche concept itself dates back to Grinnel (1917) and is now widely applied in bioecology and sociology ( Popielarz and Neal 2007 ). Segregation can be found on different dimensions ( Pianka 1981 ): there can be temporal niches (for example, Carothers and Jaksic 1984 ; Kronfeld-Schor and Dayan 2003 ; Castro-Arellano and Lacher 2009 ; Hayward and Slotow 2009 ), spatial niches ( Hagen et al. 2007 ), trophic niches ( Dammhahn et al.…”

“…Connectivity is apparent at scales from the centimetre-scale movement of rotifers to food patches (Ignoffo et al 2005) to longdistance bird migration (Alerstam et al 2007). From a conceptual point of view, connectivity is crucial in a broad spectrum of contexts from conservation (Jones et al 2007) and pest and disease vector management (Grilli & Bruno 2007) to gene flow (Boulet et al 2007), the generation of species diversity (Genner et al 2007), the regulation of competitive advantage (Hagen et al 2007) and metapopultion dynamics (Hanski 1998).…”

“…For example, lesser prairie chickens generally occupy habitats containing mid-and tall grasses throughout the year (Haukos & Zavaleta, 2016;Jones, 1963) and conversion of grassland to cropland is often attributed to declines in abundance of both lesser and greater prairie chickens (Hagen et al, 2004;Johnson et al, 2020). However, there is evidence that lesser prairie chickens use croplands, particularly during winter months, and presence of some cropland in the landscape can increase abundance of this species, likely through providing winter forage (Hagen et al, 2007;Ross et al, 2016b). Lesser prairie chickens also benefit from landscape heterogeneity, so the presence of cropland may additionally help create habitat mosaics that support the different landscape types F I G U R E 4 Examples of observed landscapes surrounding lesser prairie chicken (LEPC), greater prairie chicken (GRPC), northern bobwhite (NOBO), and ring-necked pheasant (RNEP) survey routes that contained grassland configured for optimal abundance for each species of interest based on the results of edge density (ED) models.…”
