Ni‐doped ZnO: Studies on structural and magnetic properties

Abstract: The Zn 1-x Ni x O (0 ! x ! 0.1) systems were synthesized by a solid-state reaction technique at 700 8C for 7 h. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern reveals the presence of secondary peaks due to NiO in Ni overdoped (>0.03) ZnO matrix. The compositional mapping on 5% Ni-doped ZnO on an electron probe microstructural analyzer (EPMA) indicates the segregation of oxides of Ni on the bulk surface. The ZnO samples doped with 3 and 5% Ni exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). But, 7 and 10% Ni-doped ZnO samp… Show more

“…The occurrence of extra peaks and the intensity dependence on the Al concentration signifies that these peaks are due to the presence of additional phases in wurtzite ZnO mainly related to metallic Ni and NiO-like crystalline structures. It is known that Ni is very unsTable in the ZnO matrix and has the tendency to form clusters of metallic Ni or NiO 29) . The dominant phase is, however, the wurtzite because of smaller concentrations of Ni (10%) and Al (0-2.5%) atoms in the prepared samples.…”

“…These spectra are considered as the internal reference spectrum shown in Fig. c and d . The presence of asymmetric behavior in two unresolved overlapping peaks of oxygen 1s spectrum indicates that oxygen exists in two chemical states in both the compounds associated with the surface and chemical bonds (indicated by arrows in both Fig.…”

“…Majority of reports available in the literature on Zn1xNixO system are focused on the magnetic and electrical properties from DMS point of view . Nonetheless, reports dealing with fundamental properties of Ni containing ZnO system are scarce in the literature . Mohapatra et al.…”

“…As the Ni content increases beyond the limit of the solid solubility of Ni in ZnO, part of Ni ions does not enter in the crystalline structure of ZnO and thus crystallizes alone forming nano NiO grains as indicated by the XRD patterns. Such a structural degradation in the ZnO lattice may be attributed to the introduction of a foreign impurity with subsequent annealing [30]. As seen in Fig.…”
