NGS transcriptomic analysis uncovers the possible resistance mechanisms of olive to Spilocea oleagina leaf spot infection

Abstract: Spilocea oleagina is a dangerous obligate fungal pathogen of olive, feared in the Mediterranean countries, causing Peacock’s eye or leaf spot infection, which can lead to a serious yield loss of approximately 20% or higher depending on climatic conditions. Coping with this disease is much more problematic for organic farms. To date, knowledge on the genetic control of possible mechanisms of resistance/low susceptibility is quite limited. In this work, comparative transcriptomic analysis (RNA-seq) was conducted… Show more

“…Apart from the aforementioned studies, the transcriptome of the olive tree has also been investigated under various biotic and abiotic stresses (Table 2). Regarding the biotic stressors, Marchese et al (2023) worked on a comparative transcriptomic analysis (RNA-seq) of leaf tissues from two varieties, Koroneiki (low susceptible) and Nocellara del Belice (high susceptible), infected by the obligate fungal pathogen Spilocea oleagina [94]. In their study, they reported significant differences between the two varieties including the early signaling and defense responses of Koroneiki and the expression of unique genes compared to Nocellara del Belice [94].…”

Another research group examined the Verticillium wilt of two olive varieties, Frantoio (tolerant) and Picual (susceptible), in the root tissue, resulting in significant differences in both varieties in the absence and presence of the pathogen [95].…”
