Next-generation ultra-compact calorimeters based on oriented crystals

Abstract: Calorimeters based on oriented crystals provide unparalleled compactness and resolution in measuring the energy of electromagnetic particles. Recent experiments performed at CERN and DESY beamlines by the AXIAL/ELIOT experiments demonstrated a significant reduction in the radiation length inside tungsten and PbWO 4 , the latter being the scintillator used for the CMS ECAL, observed when the incident particle trajectory is aligned with a lattice axis within ∼ 1 •. This remarkable effect, being observed over the… Show more

“…The crystalline target was mounted on a high-precision goniometer equipped with two linear stages (vertical and horizontal) to move the crystal under test into the beam path and two rotational stages to orient its lattice planes or axes with respect to the average beam direction [63]. The crystal was mounted on a light plastic support that was built to guarantee a pre-alignment of the order of 1 mrad at the installation on the rotational stages.…”

“…The electromagnetic interactions between crystalline matter and charged particles can occur with a small angle between the lattice axes (the periodic strings of nuclei) of the former and the trajectories of the latter. If this is the case, in general, the features of such interactions are substantially different from those occurring in amorphous matter and depend on the angle between the input trajectories and the target axes [1,2].…”
