Next generation of microservices for the 5G Service‐Based Architecture

Abstract: The architecture for 5G core includes a Service-Based Architecture for the diverse network functions (NFs), which relies on HTTP/2 for the SBI and TCP as the underlying transport protocol. The specifications of the HTTP family is moving towards more efficient and secure protocols, which are based on UDP to assure enhanced transport but using TLS to secure the communication channel. The next generation of microservices needs to be more secure, performant and easily manageable, where HTTP/3 and containers orches… Show more

“…Although these are important metrics, other broader results such as reliability can also be examined for benchmarking purposes. Since SBA was first proposed for the 5G core network, several metrics such as CPU/memory cost, requests success rate, and some HTTP-specific performance metrics have already been studied in [25]. These metrics can also be studied in the proposed SBA-based vRAN case in the future.…”

“…Another important aspect is that initially the system software will most likely be based on a few larger services covering a wider range of functionality. As the system matures and the application needs certain features, the service will become more specialized and smaller in scope, while the individual services will become more fine-grained and therefore increase in number [25].…”

“…Service design process should be offered in a modular architecture in order to construct flexible services considering the context and resource availability for different intents. The concept of microservices [90] adopted from software engineering can provide the decomposition of the service design lifecycle into individual sub-services in order to construct the services according to context in IBN.…”

“…• The SBA design strategy is a modern software design model where each function is packaged as a service that can be accessed remotely and independently via a common transmission medium, also known as a common information bus (CIB) [26]. By adopting the SBA design, the vSmartEdu framework facilitates the management and maintenance processes with dynamically reconfigurable workflows and makes it easy to scale, extend, add, remove, and contain the system functions flexibly.…”
