Next-generation nutraceuticals: bioactive peptides from plant proteases

Abstract: Bioactive peptides are short and specific fragments of proteins with a wide range of biological activities that provide health benefits to the host. These natural peptides are safe and nontoxic and do not show any side effects. Nowadays, the production and characterization of bioactive peptides have been a key area of research as they show great potential as nutraceuticals and functional foods. Thus, bioactive peptides are considered next-generation therapeutic agents that can replace pharmaceutical products w… Show more

“…They possess potent antioxidant properties, acting as effective scavengers of various oxidants, thanks to the presence of phenolic rings with multiple hydroxyl groups in their chemical structure [ 106 ]. In recent years, in addition to the active principles mentioned above, bioactive peptides from plant proteases formulated as nutraceuticals have been considered as the next generation of nutraceuticals [ 107 ]. For example, it has been demonstrated that the clinical effectiveness of bioactive peptides with antihypertensive properties hinges on two crucial factors: how well they resist degradation by gastrointestinal peptidases and their ability to be absorbed into the bloodstream [ 108 ].…”

“…In today's global chemicals landscape, the focus is squarely on biomolecules like enzymes, renowned for their exceptional catalytic efficiency. Among them, proteases lead the way, comprising 60% of worldwide enzyme sales and finding utility in diverse industries spanning detergents, leather, textiles, food, and pharmaceuticals (Matkawala et al, 2022;Souza et al, 2022). Additionally, plant-derived enzymes such as papain, bromelain, and ficin have carved out their own place in various sectors, from meat tenderization to juice and beer clarification, cosmetics, textiles, baking, cheese production, edema treating, wool antishrinking, amino acid production and beyond (Shin et al, 2020;Benucci et al, 2020;Moreira Filho et al, 2020;Shouket et al, 2020).…”
