Next Generation Design and Prospects for Cannex

Abstract: The Casimir And Non-Newtonian force EXperiment (Cannex) implements the unique geometry of macroscopic plane parallel plates that guarantees an optimum sensitivity with respect to interfacial forces and their gradients. Based on experience from the recently completed proof-of-principle phase, we have started a re-design of the setup aiming to reduce systematic effects and maximize the achievable sensitivity. Several propositions have been made to measure Casimir forces in and out of thermal equilibrium, hypothe… Show more

“…In future work we plan to use SELCIE with a genetic algorithm to find experimental configurations which optimise the possibility of detecting a chameleon fifth force. This optimisation algorithm could be used, for example, to extend the reach of current and future experiments that search for chameleon fifth forces with atom interferometry [33,34,41,55,56], ultra-cold neutrons [57][58][59][60][61][62], torsion balances [63][64][65], Casimir experiments [66][67][68][69][70] or opto-mechanical sensors [71][72][73][74].…”

“…A few prospective experiments for constraining the parameters of axionlike particles and non-Newtonian gravity are suggested in the literature but have not yet been performed. Here, one should mention an experiment measuring the Casimir pressure between parallel plates at up to 25-30 µm separations (Cannex) [117][118][119][120]. An approach for searching for dark matter axions with m a < 1 µeV using a superconducting radio frequency cavity was proposed in [121].…”

“…Here, we consider limits that can be obtained by the Casimir And Non-Newtonian force EXperiment (Cannex) [13] (see also [37][38][39]). This experiment consists of two parallel plates in a vacuum chamber and has been devised to measure the Casimir force and hypothetical fifth forces.…”
