Newly designed identifying method for ice thickness on high‐voltage transmission lines via machine vision

Abstract: The icing of transmission lines will bring considerable challenges to the safe operation of the power grid. Therefore, a novel method combines machine vision and machine learning algorithms for identifying the ice thickness on high-voltage transmission line (HVTL) as proposed herein. First, noise and background interference in the image are filtered, and the grey image is used as input. Then, the algorithms of improved Canny edge detection, Hough transform, improved K-means clustering, and least-squares fittin… Show more

“…Where σ 0 is the horizontal stress at the time of erection (MPa); t 0 is the temperature at the time of erection (°C); e is the elastic modulus of the conductor (MPa); α is the coefficient of linear expansion of the conductor (1/°C). Therefore, the combination of Equations ( 8), (11), and ( 12) is used to calculate the l v , which is as Equation (13).…”

“…There are many studies on end-to-end networks, such as Weng Zhi and others when detecting key parts of transmission lines, The following improvements were made to YoLoV3, The Res2Net residual module was added to the original model. The application of migration learning enhances the integration of up and down information and improves the accuracy of network to small goals [9] . He Xiangjie et al, on the SPP structure improvements mainly using hollow convolution to replace the three maximum pooled layers, and added a residual block behind the SPP structure [15] ,Although the method can achieve feature fusion, it becomes more complex in terms of structure.…”

“…As an important section of the transmission lines, isolated-span transmission lines are widely adopted to connect two tension towers at some complex terrain zones, such as crossing high mountains, broad rivers, large-scale facilities etc. Ice disasters threaten the normal operation of the grid [2][3][4][5]. Ice accumulating on conductors drops down in the case of rising temperature or wind excitation, called ice-shedding.…”
