Two of the possible influences on rivalry conflict levels and rivalry termination probabilities are the presence of multiple, other rivalries and factors differentially associated with varying types of rivalry. Moreover, these kinds of influences are likely to interact. 4 hypotheses combining these variables are examined in the chapter. Multiple rivals tend to increase the likelihood of conflict while they decrease the chances for rivalry termination. Positional rivals, however, demonstrate less probability of both conflict and termination in comparison to spatial rivalries and rivalries combining both spatial and positional attributes.
