“…These three issues suggest a more critical appraisal of the oSl ages is warranted. The oSl age of 62.6 ± 6 ka for the Waihau Bay loess falls within oiS 4, suggesting a correlation to the widespread Porewa loess (milne & Smalley 1979;Kennedy 1988Kennedy ,1994Litchfield & Rieser 2005). This is consistent with the presence of the Rotoehu tephra overlying this loess, with a paleosol developed in between.…”

“…Similar solifluction deposits have been described for the southern axial ranges by Cotton and Te Punga (1955), Stevens (1957), and Brodie (1957), and Brodie obtained a number of LGM radiocarbon ages of channel deposits within fossil gullies. In lowland areas to the west of the axial ranges deposits below the Rerewhakaaitu Tephra also contain erosion surfaces and less soil development than above (McGlone et al, 1984;Pillans et al, 1993;Kennedy, 1994;Newnham et al, 2003). In summary, there is abundant evidence for periglacial erosion and solifluction during the LGM, which, by analogue with the historic, deforestationinduced hillslope processes resulted in increased sediment supply to the rivers, inducing river aggradation.…”

“…His stratigraphic age, statistically consistent with the age estimate of Wilson et al (1992), was based on correlation of marine terraces at Mahia Peninsula, on which Rotoehu Ash is present, with dated coral reef sequences (Berryman 1993). Kennedy (1988Kennedy ( , 1994 suggested from stratigraphic evidence and correlation with oxygen isotope stages that Rotoehu Ash at Tapapa is aged c. 50 ka. Pillans & Wright (1992), in a tephrostratigraphic study on sediments in marine cores from Bay of Plenty, tentatively identified Rotoehu Ash in one core (S794) and ascribed it an age, based on extrapolated sedimentation rates, of c. 55 ka.…”
