New woodland beetle species (Coleoptera) in Estonian fauna

Abstract: Metsamardikate (Coleoptera) uued liigid Eestis The article presents faunistic data on 85 species of Coleoptera new to the Estonian fauna. Most of the material has been collected within the framework of various research and monitoring projects carried out in Estonian nature reserves (1998-2009). A new type of trunk window trap, designed by the author in 2004 mainly for monitoring purposes, has been successfully used. 17 of the 85 species are new for the fauna of whole Baltic region: Pseudeuglenes pentat… Show more

“…As a result, 3597 species of beetles are included in the new checklist. Based on the faunal data from neighbouring countries ( Lundberg and Gustafsson 1995 ; Silfverberg 2004 ; Telnov 2004 , 2010 ; Barševskis 2003 ; Barševskis et al 2005 ; Alexandrovitch et al 1996 ; Szujecki 1961 , 1976 ; Stebnicka 1976 , 1978 ; Smrezyński 1965 , 1966 , 1968 , 1972 , 1974 , 1976 ; Burakowski et al 1973 , 1974 , 1976 , 1978 , 1979 , 1980 , 1981 , 1986a , b , c , 1987 , 1989 , 1990 , 1991 ; Wanat and Mokrzycki 2005, Tarnawski and Buchholz 2008a , b ; Süda 2006 , 2009 ; Fauna Europaea Web Service (2009) and other faunistic works), a further 1390 species of beetles are included as expected species for Lithuanian fauna ( Table 5 ).…”

“…Xyleborinus saxesenii —20% of analysed specimens contained the pathogen. The first record of X. saxesenii was in western Estonia from the Laulaste Nature Reserve, south-eastern Estonia in 2008 and from Matsalu, western Estonia in 2009 [ 111 ]. Later, X. saxesenii was found from two localities in South Estonia, Valga County: Koiva wooded meadow in 2013 and Soontaga in 2015, 2020.…”

“…The implementation of such highly efficient research methods as the use of window traps has helped to detect new woodland beetle species for Estonian fauna [ 111 , 115 ]. On the other hand, as a result of climate change, the spread of numerous southern beetle species to the north is clearly noticeable [ 115 ], especially in the last couple of decades.…”

“…The majority of them were collected from forest habitats (Fig. 2) by I. Süda using trunk window traps (TWT) which were designed in 2004 (see Süda 2009;Sammet et al 2016). This type of trap has proved to be effective in collecting saproxylous and corticolous beetles (especially Eucnemidae species, with nocturnal activity), as well as several saproxylous and mycetophagous dipteran species (e.g., Keroplatus spp., family Keroplatidae; Dynatosoma spp., family Mycetophilidae).…”
