New Ways of Sharing and Using Authority Information

Abstract: For many years, the public image of national libraries has been that of closed institutions open only to researchers as a place of last resort. National libraries are seeking to change that image and, through cooperation, establish themselves as access points for information, nationally and internationally. TEL, The European Library, is an example of how this may be achieved.

“…More work is needed to study the process of extending existing authority files based on historical reference works, merging controlled vocabularies from multiple sources, and finally incorporating local authority files into general authority files as it seems appropriate. Our experience suggests that a distributed model of authority control as suggested by several researchers [20,17,31] could provide a standardized infrastructure for this process.…”

“…The LEAF project reported that "a common format is not yet available for the exchange of authority data within the archival community or for the cross domain exchange of such data between libraries, archives, museums and related institutions." [17] OCLC is also currently working on a Virtual International Authority File project with the LC and the German National Library to test automatic linking of LC-NAF and German Personal Name Authority File through OCLCs matching algorithms [32]. In a recent article, the LCs Barbara Tillett has also suggested the possible creation of a "virtual union authority file" that would link all national authority files to a central server, each authority file would be hosted locally and this server would simply harvest data as requested by the user [31].…”

“…Highly visible attempts at author disambiguation can be seen in would permit national or regional variations in authorized form to co-exist, thereby supporting worldwide users' needs for variations in preferred language, script, and spelling [5]. The possibility of global integrated authority control data has made feasible many potential scenarios of use [7,12]. A key idea has been to use authority records as a building block for the Semantic Web [23].…”

“…Recollecting the main purpose of library authority records-the disambiguation of persons described-it may be argued that those records leading to wrong links are not sufficiently rich in content to serve their original purpose. 18 The project ran as a funded test for thirty-six months, ending in May 2004. Thereafter it was left as an integrated part of the MALVINE search engine, where it is still used because it is seen as "highly relevant [content] to the cultural heritage of Europe."…”
