New upper limit on the decayηe+e

Abstract: We have searched for the rare decay of the meson →e ϩ e Ϫ using the CLEO II detector. The 's were produced in e ϩ e Ϫ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring ͑CESR͒. We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction B(→e ϩ e Ϫ)Ͻ7.7ϫ10 Ϫ5. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about 10 Ϫ9. ͓S0556-2821͑97͒01421-5͔

“…All of them confirm the main conclusion about the radiative decay mode enhancement, although with smaller branching ratio ranging from 0.9 · 10 −6 [5] to 2 · 10 −6 [7]. The recent experimental upper limits [9] are still far above of these predictions.…”

“…In fact this limit has been pushed down to 4.9 · 10 −6 lately using HADES dilepton data [24]. However, the theoretical expectation from helicity suppression is still four orders of magnitude lower [56]. The absence of any η peak in the measured spectra allows us to conclude that the true branching ratio must be significantly lower than the upper limit just mentioned [57].…”

“…While the direct decay of the η meson into a µ + µ − pair has been observed, for the corresponding e + e − decay only an upper limit of BR(η → e + e − ) < 2.7 · 10 −5 is known [362]. However, the theoretical expectation from helicity suppression is still four orders of magnitude lower [363]. The Dalitz decays of the pseudoscalar mesons, P = π 0 , η, η , are treated via the parametrization [364], dΓ…”
