New Type of Organic Sensitizers with a Planar Amine Unit for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: A new type of organic sensitizers incorporating a planar amine unit have been synthesized and demonstrated to be a highly efficient sensitizers, showing evidence of lateral interactions on the TiO(2) surface. Under standard global air mass 1.5 solar conditions, the JK-98 sensitized cell gave a short circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) of 16.78 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) of 0.745 V, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.70, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency (η) of 8.71%.

“…2, the simulated spectra consist of a very intense and well isolated transition in the region of 400e700 nm. In particular, for P2T, the calculated maximum absorption (l max ) is located at 482 nm which is in good agreement with the corresponding experimental result [22]. For PC2T, the incorporation of C atom results in slightly red-shifted and broadened absorption spectrum, as compared to P2T.…”

“…Recently, a highly efficient organic dye containing dithiophene p-spacer with planar amine-based donor group (denoted as P2T, as shown in Fig. 1) was designed and reported by Do et al, which achieves a promising conversion efficiency of 8.71% [22]. Herein, motivated by the prior work of Wang et al and Do et al [21,22], we consider using fastening atoms (C, N, and O) to rigidify dithiophene via covalent immobilization of the adjacent two thiophene units.…”

“…DSSCs with polypyridyl ruthenium sensitizers have shown the highest efficiencies (> 11 %). [7][8][9] Several strategies have been considered for addressing both these issues such as the use of b-cyclodextrin-encapsulated molecules, [10] the structural modification of the sensitizers, [11] and the use of additives. Nevertheless, many organic sensitizers have still presented a low conversion efficiency and low stability.…”

“…[ 26 ] To prevent dye aggregation on TiO 2 surface, t -butyl and dimethyl groups are introduced to modify the bridged triphenylamine core. This approach also increases the solubility of the dyes.…”
